Further Information and Sources

According to Young in The Parish Register of Kingston, Stephen Cartwright was born on 24 January 1801 (date from the monument which is no longer visible), he was baptized on 1 March 1801 and died on 20 June 1814.

Digital Kingston (accessed 2016-03-04) notes that his death at age 13 is recorded in the Kingston Gazette (22 June 1814, pg 2, col 2) which is consistent with Young’s date above.  Unfortunately Stephen Cartwright’s death is not shown in the burial register because pages for 1814 burials are missing.

The Cartwright obelisk records three generations of the Cartwright family, beginning with Richard Cartwright, Sr. and his wife Joanna Beasley: Honourable Richard Cartwright (son of Richard Sr., buried in Montreal), Magdalen Secord (wife of Hon R. Cartwright), and their children, Mary Magdalen Dobbs (wife of A.T. Dobbs), James, Richard*, Hannah, Thomas, Stephen and twins John Solomon and Robert David.

* Richard Cartwright died 4 May 1811 but is not listed in the burial register and is assumed to have been buried elsewhere.
